Planet Zoo 2 launches tomorrow, October 13, at 3 PM BST on Steam. If you pre-purchased it, Frontier is aiming to open preloading today at that same time. The sequel adds fully aquatic species and birds that fly freely in aviaries, and it also brings a clear jump in hardware: the minimum now asks for an RTX 2060 and 16 GB of RAM, so not every PC that ran the first Planet Zoo will make the cut. It costs $49.99, and pre-purchasing gets you the Bonus Content Pack.
Planet Zoo 2 PC requirements
These are the official requirements from the Steam page:
| Minimum | Recommended | |
|---|---|---|
| GPU | RTX 2060 (6 GB), RX 5600 XT (6 GB) or Arc A750 (8 GB) | RTX 3070 (8 GB), RX 6700 XT (12 GB) or Arc A770 (16 GB) |
| CPU | Core i7-8700K or Ryzen 5 3600 | Core i7-10700K or Ryzen 7 5800X |
| RAM | 16 GB | 16 GB |
| Storage | 40 GB, SSD recommended | 40 GB on SSD (required) |
| OS | 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 | 64-bit Windows 11 |
Both tiers need DirectX 12. Two notes from Frontier are worth reading: at the recommended tier the SSD is a requirement, not a suggestion, and on Windows 10 they warn that Microsoft has ended support, so they cannot guarantee ongoing compatibility. There is no Mac or Linux version.
Which GPUs run it
Using canirun’s benchmark scores with 16 GB of RAM, here is where popular cards land. Grades are measured against the recommended requirement:
- Clear the recommended: RTX 3070, RTX 4070 and RX 9070 XT grade B, and the RTX 5070 and RTX 5080 move up to A. See what else the RTX 3070 runs.
- Clear the minimum, not the recommended: the RTX 3060, RTX 3060 Ti, RTX 4060 and RX 7600 grade C, tight. The RTX 2060 and RX 6600 XT clear the minimum with a D: they get in, but they will struggle.
- Below the minimum: GTX 1650, GTX 1060 6GB, GTX 1660 Super, RTX 3050, RX 580 and Arc B580.
Memory is a filter too. With 16 GB as the minimum, a PC with 8 GB falls below what Frontier asks for even if the graphics card is good enough.
The jump from the original shows in canirun’s numbers: the first Planet Zoo’s recommended tier has a GPU score of 12,550, while the sequel’s minimum already asks for 14,300.
What about Steam Deck?
Valve rates it Verified on Steam Deck. The details are on the Planet Zoo 2 Steam Deck page.
Can your PC run Planet Zoo 2?
Here is how your setup grades against the sequel, the first Planet Zoo and Transport Fever 3, which on canirun asks for the same recommended GPU score:
| Game | Rec. GPU score | Rec. RAM | Min. RAM | Your PC |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| | 21,750 | 16 GB | 16 GB | ? |
| | 12,550 | 16 GB | 8 GB | ? |
| | 21,750 | 16 GB | 8 GB | ? |
If you are right on the edge, the full Planet Zoo 2 page shows which upgrade raises your grade the most.
