The Forever Winter October update removes the 62 fps cap and cuts stutter
The Forever Winter's October 2026 update removes the 62 fps cap, cuts VRAM use across nearly every map and shrinks Downtown's streaming stalls. Here is what changed, the PC requirements and which GPUs clear the minimum.

Fun Dog Studios released The Forever Winter’s October 2026 Update on October 30, and much of the patch is aimed squarely at PC performance. It removes the 62 fps cap and cuts memory use across nearly every raid map. It also shrinks the streaming hitches that hurt the most, like the ones in Downtown. If you shelved the game because of stutter, or because your midrange card came up short, this is the patch to try it again. One thing to know before you update: the download is larger than usual, though the studio says the final size on disk should be smaller once it is installed.
What the patch fixes
According to the official patch notes:
- Frame cap: the 62 fps cap is gone. The “Unlimited” frame rate option now actually means unlimited.
- Downtown: major hitches when new areas stream in are fixed. Worst-case stalls drop from roughly half a second to about a tenth.
- Ashen Mesa: large fights with multiple mechs and tanks no longer slow down as they go on. A potential multi-second freeze shortly after level start is also fixed.
- Less VRAM: Ashen Mesa, Downtown, Elephant Mausoleum, Frozen Swamp, Scrapyard and Mech Trenches get large reductions in the cost of geometry, textures and shadows, with no change to the look at gameplay distance. That means less VRAM, less streaming and fewer stutters. Sky textures in Stairway Gate and Shanti Rooftops also use far less VRAM.
- Cheaper enemies: mechs, Exos, drones, turrets and several infantry types are much cheaper to render.
- Crashes: a potential crash when switching audio devices mid-session is fixed. So is a rare crash tied to line-of-sight checks against recently killed enemies.
The patch also brings new content:
- smoke grenades
- enemies that reload and throw grenades
- new parts for the 36M, Kriss Vector 45, USP and SVD
- new quests
- the “Maskochist” skin for Maskman, free for everyone
What to do if your PC is borderline
For modest rigs, the most useful change is in the Low settings. Low now turns off Lumen reflections and Lumen global illumination, which Fun Dog says gives a measurable GPU saving on lower-end PCs. If your card has headroom and you want Lumen back, set Global Illumination to Medium or above. And if you play with the frame rate on “Unlimited”, you will now see your real frame rate instead of sitting at 62.
The Forever Winter PC requirements
These are the requirements from the Steam store page:
| Minimum | Recommended | |
|---|---|---|
| GPU | RTX 2080 Super (8 GB) or RX 5700 XT (8 GB) | RTX 3080 Ti (12 GB) or RX 6800 XT (16 GB) |
| CPU | Core i7-9700 or Ryzen 7 3700X | Core i7-12700 or Ryzen 7 5700X |
| RAM | 16 GB | 32 GB |
| Storage | 60 GB (SSD recommended) | 60 GB (SSD recommended) |
| OS | Windows 10 64-bit, DirectX 12 | Windows 10 64-bit, DirectX 12 |
This is a demanding game: the minimum already asks for an RTX 2080 Super and 16 GB of RAM, and the recommended spec goes up to 32 GB. Here is how popular GPUs land in our data:
- Clear the minimum, with little headroom: the RTX 4060, RTX 3060 Ti and RTX 3070. They run the game but grade D against the recommended spec.
- Clear the recommended spec: the RTX 4070 and RX 9070 XT grade C, and the RTX 5070 and RTX 5080 reach B.
- Fall below the minimum: the RTX 3060, RX 7600 and Arc B580.
Grades are always measured against the recommended requirement and assume 16 GB of RAM.
On Steam Deck, Valve has not verified the game and rates it Unsupported. Our spec-based estimate is F, and it is only that, an estimate. You can see the Steam Deck details.
